Book review #4

One Hundred Horses
By: Sarah Lean
Nell life wasn’t anything special. She was a “good girl” who never did anything different or got in trouble. Her mom planed everything out for her. Every day was the same for her two. She would go to one of the extra things after school her mom signed her up for, be the last one to leave, head home and do homework while her mom works. Every break she would go to her grandma’s house.
One day Nell was outside and saw some broken lights. She decided to fix them. Later someone told the teacher and she got in trouble. A few days later her mom said she was sending her to her aunts for summer break. Nell tried to tell her mom she didn’t want to go and fixing lights was no reason to be sent there but her mom insisted.
The day before she had to leave her mom told her to run upstairs and get a suitcase. While in the attic Nell uncovers some old boxes. Each one held memories of her life. Behind all the boxes Nell found an old suitcase. When she opened it there was a carousel her dad had made her when she was four. When she was eleven he left. Her mom said he ran off to Las Vegas with a woman named Susie. Nell decides to take the suitcase with her to try and rebuild it.
When Nell gets to her aunt’s house, she can tell there is a lot of stuff to get used to. Her and her mom go in and talk for a while. When her mom says she is ready to leave, Nell says she will get the suitcase first to prevent her mom form finding the carousel. While she is getting it, she hears the thundering of hooves. A horse was heading straight for her. She dropped the suitcase and screamed, the horse reared and threw its rider. The rider grabbed Nell’s suitcase and ran. Who is this mystery rider? Read One Hundred Horses to find out.
