Book Review #4 A Rose for Melinda

A Rose for Melinda
By: Lurlene McDaniel

Two best friends, Melinda Skye and Jesse Rose, met in first grade. They had dreams for when they got older. Melinda wanted to be a professional ballerina. Jesse wants to play baseball for the Atlanta Braves. One time, a classmate pushed Melinda off the swing, so Jesse punched him and got an "in-room suspension".

After Jesse's parents get in a divorce, Jesse and his mother move to California where she grew up. Melinda emailed Jesse everyday to stay in touch. They tell each other everything, just like when they were in first grade. Jesse keeps complaining to Melinda about his new home and how he hates his dad and all that fun stuff.

During a dance class in Washington, Melinda passed out. So she was taken up to the hospital and had some tests ran. Turns out she had Leukemia. She was freaking out because she was losing hair and didn't know if she would ever dance again. Does she die? Does she live? What about Jesse, will he make up with his dad and learn to like his house in California?

  1. I enjoy how you tell us about the book, but you leave the climax part out of it, makes the reader have to find out on their own!

  2. God job with using enough detail but not giving away the ending.

  3. I like how you describe the book, but without giving away the ending. But I did think Jesse was a girl...
