Book
Two: The
Giver by Lois Lowry
By:
Ben Cornia
Jonas and his sister Lily live in a
community where there is no pain or suffering. There are many rules in place
and everyone must follow them. If s rule is broken then the rule breaker is punished.
Something very important is about to happen in the community. It is almost time
for Jonas’s Ceremony of Twelve. This is the time in life where each individual
is given his role in the community.
The Ceremony of Twelve takes place, but
they skip Jonas’s name. Jonas ends up being the last one to go. He is given the
assignment of Giver. The Giver is the man or woman in the
community who holds the memories of Earth’s cruel and beautiful past. The
current giver has to pass on the memories to Jonas. Jonas is given fun
memories, such as those of colors, but he is also given harsh memories like
sunburn.
Later, Jonas realizes that he must escape
from the community with these memories. He sets out with a baby named Gabe his
family had been taking care of. On their journey they encounter harsh
conditions, so Jonas must transfer memories to the baby so they both survive.
Jonas reaches a point where it was extremely painful for him. Does he have the strength
to go on?
I recommend this book to anyone who is willing to throw
it at the end. It is truly an excellent book.
I never really thought about enjoying this type of book but it sounds really good.
