Burning Up is a book about a teenage
girl named Macy, who loves her little town. But when she gets an assignment for
school, she needs a ride to the library. Getting into the car, she asks her
grandpa about an old burnt down building across the street. He starts acting
weird and mischievous like it was a big secret. When he doesn’t answer, the
curiosity starts to kill her inside. The next day she starts to ask the
teachers and people around. All of a sudden everybody, “doesn’t remember the
incident.” Having had the experience of
being caught in a fire, she goes way deeper than her assignment requires. With
the death of a new friend, she thrives to find the truth, finding out that a
Native American girl was killed. Her boy wonder Austin gets all caught up in
finding out what happened too. Then Austin finds an old gas tank in his
grandpa’s garage and then learns the attitude his grandparents had against the
blacks. He puts two and two together and they both realize that their little
town outside of Cincinnati just might be discriminatory. Trying to find the
truth they realize it was right in front of them both the whole time. That
their town wasn’t segregated, but was still prejudiced. Finding out what
happened they were both crushed. Then a giant twist appears, sweeping both of
them off their feet.
