Boost

By: Kathy Makel

Savvy Christopher has just moved from Arizona to Rhode Island with her mom, dad and sister Callie. Her passion is basketball; she has a mean three-pointer. Oh and did I mention she is in eigth grade and is 6’ 4” and still growing! She gets the huge opportunity to play for the elite 18-year-old team Fire. She is good at basketball, but she needs some help (she is only 14.)
During the season her Aunt, who her family is living with, has gotten hurt. Her Aunt lives on a farm and needs someone to help run it while she is trying to get better. So, Savvy volunteers. Lifting hay bales, building fences, and working with sheep makes her muscles “double” in size. People start to raise suspicions to whether or not she is using steroids.

During a game, one of her team mates finds a prescription steroid bottle in her bag. After the game ends Savvy is called to the coaches room to talk about this issue. Savvy states those are NOT hers, but nobody believes her because come on 6’ 4” eighth grader with big muscles doesn’t sound suspicious at all. She gets suspended from the team just until she gets a blood test to see if she really is using steroids, which takes a lot of time.

During Savvy’s crazy life right now her sister, Callie, has some complications too. She is trying to lose major weight because in cheerleading she is a flyer but, she is too heavy to be one, and she needs to get stronger. Savvy see some things of Callie’s that may be the clue to the weird prescription bottle in her bag, but she doesn’t think that her sister would do anything like that. But, you know, how far will they really go to “boost" their games.
