By Frank B. Linderman
book review 6

Pretty-shield was a woman of the Crows with many grandchildren. Frank B. Linderman, but known as Sign-talker by the Crows. Had taken an interest in the Crow ways and asked Pretty-shield if she would answer some of his question about her life as a Crow woman. He had already made a book of the Crow chief’s live and wanted to write one about Crow women. Pretty-shield was the only one to agree to talk about her life from the other Crow women he had asked. Crow people were very to-them-self’s. Pretty-shield tells that when she was young it was a very peaceful time; everyone had fat meat to eat, and the Crow’s had made peace treaties with their enemies. She mainly talked about events before her time. One of the stories that she tells happened when she was young. Pretty-shield and some other girls were playing; some boy’s came and played with them too. They were dancing around and singing portending to have and feast. One of the boys found and black powered gun in a bush, he started to dance and sing. “I am a worrier come at me” he said. One of his friends said “I will take you”. He took off his clothes and run at his friend yelling. The boy that had the gun pointed it at his running friend and shot. The gun fired, the naked boy fell. His friend who held the gun ran to him. “I am sorry my friend, I did not mean to shot you” he said. The boy on the ground said “I know” and died there.
